fiddle camp pictureFiddlers drawn to the fiery beat and the lovely lilt of Celtic music can hone their skills and go beyond the tunes at the 5th annual Bozeman Celtic Fiddle Camp, June 14-19th, 2010. Classes will be divided by ability and experience, and all tunes will be taught by ear.

Classes for elementary through high school age will be held at the Children’s Museum, corner of Babcock and Wilson, Monday through Thursday (June 14th-17th) in the afternoon. Adult and advanced classes will be held at Singing Strings Studio in the evening, also Monday through Thursday. The advanced class is open to all ages, but students must audition to be admitted.

On Friday, there will be no class and every fiddler will practice hard to get ready for the next day!! Saturday June 19th will be a full day of classes, rehearsal, lunch, and a performance by the students in all classes. The Saturday events will be held at Weather Rock Music Barn, 30 miles northeast of Bozeman in the beautiful Shields valley.

Camp is open to age 8 and up, with some playing experience required. Inquire for details.

Cost for the entire camp (including lunch on the last day) is $120, $110 if registered by May 15th.

fiddle camp pictureThough we will learn strategies for picking up melodies by ear, we will learn more than just tunes. We will learn how to put the right flavor in the tune by using specific finger and bow techniques, and we will learn the differences between different types of Celtic tunes. We will talk about the feelings in the tunes, including their background in Celtic culture. Though melody plays a major role, it is important that each musician learn how to individualize. The camp will be about exploring choices, and learning the elements that make the music sound authentic.

There are many written and audio sources for Celtic music these days, but there can be no substitute for getting together with other fiddlers and working out exactly what YOU want to do with the tune. The camp will be about having fun making music TOGETHER!!

Whether you are a veteran of Celtic music, or a relative newcomer, there’s a place for you in the Bozeman Celtic Music Camp! Give it a whirl!!
